Mandvi Beach & Vijay Vilas Palace

Where the Desert Meets the Sea: Palaces, Ships, and Sunsets.

After witnessing the infinite white salt of the Rann, the deep blue Arabian Sea at Mandvi offers a refreshing contrast. Located just 60 km from Bhuj, Mandvi was once a major port city. Today, it is famous for the royal Vijay Vilas Palace (a Bollywood favorite), pristine beaches, and a 400-year-old wooden shipbuilding industry that is still active. It is the perfect extension to your Kutch itinerary.

1. The Royal Experience: Vijay Vilas Palace

Built in 1929 by Rao Vijayrajji, this palace is an architectural masterpiece. It blends Rajput domes, Mughal arches, and Gothic carvings. It is still the residence of the Royal Family of Kutch.

Bollywood Fame:

If the palace looks familiar, it's because you have seen it in movies. It served as the 'Sameer’s House' in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and the British HQ in Lagaan. You can walk through the same corridors and balconies.

The View from the Top:

Don't miss climbing the spiral staircase to the balcony. You get a stunning 360-degree view of the estate’s private beach and the surrounding forest.

Important Timing Note: The palace remains CLOSED for visitors between 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM for lunch. Plan to reach either in the morning or late afternoon.

2. The Living History: Shipbuilding Yards

This is not a museum; it is a live workshop. On the banks of the Rukmavati River, you will see massive wooden cargo ships being built by hand.

  • What to see: Watch skilled craftsmen shape giant timber logs into ship hulls. These ships are exported to the Middle East.
  • No Blueprints: Amazingly, the master carpenters build these 1000-tonne vessels without drawing any formal engineering plans on paper. It is all traditional knowledge passed down for generations.
  • Best View: You can view the ships from the bridge, or walk down to the river bank (be careful of the mud) to see them up close.

3. The Chill Zone: Wind Farm Beach

Mandvi Beach is clean, sandy, and lively. It gets its name from the giant wind turbines lined up along the coast.

  • Activities: Camel rides on the sand, horse riding, and water sports like jet skiing and banana boat rides.
  • Sunset: While the White Desert sunset is serene, the Mandvi sunset is dramatic as the sun sinks directly into the ocean waves.
  • Food: The beach has rows of stalls selling corn, coconut water, and the famous Kutchi Dabeli.

The Foodie Secret

Did you know? Mandvi is the birthplace of Dabeli. It was invented here in the 1960s.

Where to Eat?

Don't just eat Dabeli anywhere. Go to Joshi Dabeli or the stalls near the Bus Stand. They use the original recipe—a mix of spicy potato, pomegranate, and peanuts in a bun.

Lunch Recommendation

For a full meal, visit Osho Dining Lodge. It is an institution in Mandvi, serving unlimited, simple, and delicious Gujarati Thali at a very affordable price.
